This is the most realistic hockey game ever, very interactive, the pro mode is interesting, you can play any team in any league, you can actually sit in the penalty box and watch your team play without you.
Its been a few years since ive played a hockey game on xbox. Some new features are "lifting the stick while on defense", moving the right analog left or right to make dekes with the puck, and much more. There are so many new features from past games ive played years ago. The new features are easy to learn and make the game that much more realistic. I highly recommend this game. You'll be addicted at the first drop of the puck.
Everyone's making NHL 09 out to be the greatest sports game ever made.don't believe them. Waste of money. The point is, since patches have improved goalie reactions to stop former cheese, the only way to score a goal is to try the same technique over and over and over and over.
There are a few shots that go in 90% of the time, but the main problem is that the defensive AI is so poor that they'll let any halfway decent human opponent skate right to the net. So even though two of us share this game, only one of us can play online with our friends at a time. It's fun at first, until you start to play online and you realize that there are so many glitchy "cheese" goals that the game is completely ruined.
While there's a huge debate on whether or not this is cheese, one thing is certain: it's ridiculously boring. That aside, there are problems with the multiplayer that keeps two people from playing in many of the online modes at the same time on the same system, so if two people are on the same xbox, you can't play online team play, or in your created club. A lot of the time I end up playing other teams who do one thing: skate along the boards, past the goal line, then pass the puck back across the crease and one-time it in. Sure, it's a legit goal that would go in IRL, but the defenders would check the skater, stop the pass, or at least the goalie would poke it away as it crosses the crease.
Ridiculous.Don't buy it. It'll only aggravate you.
This game is great, usually a fan of the 2k series, but 2009 wins this year.
Probably the coolest mode on the game is the 'be a player' mode where you play yourself up the ranks of an NHL team. And the fact that you can buy a 'non-gamer nerd version with tons of crap I'll never use' for about $200.NHL 09 is extremely addictive. It's that good. Bottom line, if you're a hockey fan.buy this game. Surely EA can do better in that aspect of dynasty mode. Well, i'm tired of talking about this game, I haven't went over some other things like the ability to customize player equipment and the practice and skills modes, but they are minor, yet appreciated elements of the game as well.
You can play current teams, various international (including KHL or superleague) teams, AHL teams, Olympic teams, and historic teams. The options that you have on this game are truly amazing. You can select from vintage, current and alternate jerseys. Dynasty mode (my personal favorite as always) allows you to manage a team and build a champion. To be quite honest, this game is the reason that I bought an xbox 360. They are all made up players, so drafting is worthless. I personally always trade my picks away and never trade for or sign a fake player that the game makes out of those drafts.
Why not offer a list of ECHL, college or minor hockey players every year to draft. At least the names and player would be real (unlike George Malkin or Bob Kovalev or whatever crap-tastic names the game generates for the fake players). Managing your salary cap, on ice performance, minor league system, making trades and signing and re-signing players gives you a bit of the feel of being an NHL GM (though NHL 09 trades are much easier to make that those in real life, obviously). The game play is more realistic than ever before, obviously the graphics are better, and the features are fantastic. Start in the AHL, work your way up the lines and into the NHL and the big money.
You can pick a team or make a custom team (roster, jerseys and all) to sub in for an existing team like Phoenix where people don't even know that hockey exists, and move it to a city where people do. My only gripe with dynasty mode are the 'draft picks'. This is probably the funnest mode on the game (other than multiplayer) to hockey fans as it's pretty realistic to the real thing. It's probably the only game selling for $50+ that actually gives you the bang for your buck and is worth what's charged.
